President Idriss Deby passed away at the age of 68 on 19th April 2021. He was President of Chad for 30 years and was recently re-elected, winning by a majority vote. Deby had seized power of the former French colony in a coup in 1990.
The army reported that the President was in the region where fighting was taking place between rebels and the army on the 17th and 18th of April. The army has stated that President Deby died of injuries sustained in a battle against rebels forces in the north of Chad. General Azem, an army spokesman, publicly stated that Deby “has just breathed his last defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield”. On Monday 19th April, the army stated that 300 rebels of Front for Change and Concord (FACT) died in clashes with the army.
